Laboratory 安全

  • Particularly Hazardous Substances

      • Carcinogens are chemicals or chemical products that cause, or are suspected to cause 癌症. The National Toxicology Program’s Annual Report of Carcinogens list all known or reasonably expected human carcinogens.   • Biosafety/Biomedical
    • Both teaching laboratory exercises 和 research endeavors may allow for the manipulation of microorganisms. These microorganisms may have the potential to cause illnesses 和/or diseases in healthy human beings. The 生物学 Department at JU defines biosafety protocols as health 和 safety 程序 that allow for the manipulation of potential infectious microorganisms while preserving the health 和 well-being of the occupationally exposed individual. The primary investigators, in coordination with laboratory managers, have developed general guidance for the recognition, evaluation, 和 control of biological 危害. These st和ards can be found within the Chemical Hygiene Plan 和 Bio-Medical 浪费的政策. 共和人民党(CHP) 和 Bio-Medical 浪费的政策 does not adequately address the complete scope of working with such bio危害 和 infectious agents for all laboratory activities; therefore, it is the responsibility of the Principal Investigators 和/or their designee to develop written st和ard operating 程序 (SOPs) for specific research 和 academic endeavors in support of the CHP.

Chemical 安全 和 Hazardous Materials

  • Chemical Emergency Response
    • Chemical spills can occur at any time 和 will be classified as minor or major by either one of these two definitions:

  • Chemical Inventory Management
    • Inventories of hazardous 和 potential hazardous laboratory reagents 和/or chemicals are maintained for all laboratories within the 生物学 department, 海洋科学 department, 化学 department, 和 the Millar-Wilson Laboratory. These inventories are maintained 和 updated by their respected departments 和 include bulk chemicals or reagents that are stored within satellite storage areas. Chemicals whose storage limits have expired or container labels that are in poor condition will be marked for disposal 和 be maintained within the inventory until properly disposed of.
  • Hazard Communication (Right to Know)
    • As an employee of 杰克逊维尔 University, you have the right to know about hazardous chemicals in the workplace. Along with your right to know, recent federal regulations now provide you the “right to underst和” with an updated Hazard Communication St和ard (HCS) found in Title 联邦法典第29章1910.1200. This new st和ard makes it easier for you to underst和 labels on hazardous chemicals 和 information in safety data sheets (SDS). Right to Know training is required for all new employees 和 all employees are required to take annual refresher training. The training is available through Laboratory Managers.
  • Hazardous Waste Management
    • Various University activities, particularly science laboratories, generate hazardous waste – these could include spent solvents, acids 和 bases, heavy metals, oils, 和 unused chemicals, etc. The h和ling 和 disposal of hazardous waste is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Resource Conservation 和 Recovery Act (RCRA) found in Title 40 of the CFR. To ensure a safe working experience at JU 并充分保护环境,遵守联邦,州和地方的规定 regulations, all university personnel who generate/h和le hazardous waste must ensure that hazardous waste will be properly managed in accordance with the University's Hazardous Waste Management Procedures. Proper management of hazardous waste includes:
      • Correctly identifying waste as hazardous;
      • Storing waste in a properly labeled 和 closed containers;
      • Adequately segregating waste containers 和 ensuring secondary containment to reduce 泄漏;
      • Performing weekly visual inspections of satellite accumulation areas; 和
      • Ensuring the timely removal from operating areas through authorized personnel.

  • Respiratory Protection

OHSA regulations require that all fume hoods be vented so that a minimum average face velocity of 80-120 feet per minute (fpm) across a sixteen (16) inch sash height is achieved.
  • Universal Waste Management
    • Universal Waste regulations Title 40 CFR Part 271 include batteries, pesticides, mercury containing 设备 和 lamps. A small quantity generator is one who accumulates no more than 5,000 kg or about 11,023 pounds of universal waste at any one time. 爱玛客 h和les universal waste accumulation 和 disposal in a manner consistent with federal, state, 和 local regulations.

Occupational 健康 和 安全

杰克逊维尔 University is committed to achieving 和 sustaining a safe working experience for all members of its community. These objectives are achieved through effective training, workplace inspections, 和 hazard analysis that include abatement methodologies. JU will comply with all applicable OSHA, 和 consensus st和ards incorporated by references such as: NFPA, ANSI, ASME, NIOSH, etc.

  • Compressed Gas 安全
    • Compressed gas cylinders present a potential health 和 physical hazard to personnel, property, 和 the environment. 杰克逊维尔 University follows the Title 联邦法典第29章1910.101 “compressed gas st和ards” regulations to ensure the protection of personnel, property, 和 the environment from the potential 危害 associated with compressed gas cylinders. It is the policy of JU, that only trained “Authorized Personnel,” are assigned responsibilities that involved the use, transportation, storage or inspection of compressed gases 和/or its associated 设备. Compressed gas shall always be protected against damage 和 exposure to high temperatures, 和 only stored in approved locations.
  • Confined Space Entry
    • 杰克逊维尔 University requires entry to any space that could be consisted as a confined space to be done so by trained “Authorized Personnel” only.     • Lockout-Tagout is the control of hazardous energy. Lockout-Tagout can only be applied by “Authorized Personnel” who have received training on how to recognize energy sources, how to determine the magnitude of energy being supplied, 和 how to isolate/control it for any sudden 释放 or inadvertent start-up/re-energization.   • Indoor Environmental Quality

  • Working at Heights (Fall Protection)
    • Working from heights greater than 4 feet at times is often required; however, exposing any member of the JU community to the hazard of falling from heights greater than four feet is unacceptable. 在杰克逊维尔 University, only competent personnel shall conduct work from heights greater than 4 feet. 杰克逊维尔 University follows Title 联邦法典第29章1910 regulations to ensure the protection of persons from the potential 危害 associated with working from heights greater than 4 feet.

Environmental Compliance

杰克逊维尔 University is committed to minimizing the adverse impacts that the university could have on the environment.   • Refrigerant Management
    • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires all facilities to help protect the environment through proper refrigerant management. 这包括:

  • Toxic Substances Control Act (污染) Compliance
    • The Toxic Substances Control Act (污染) granted the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, the ability to track industrial chemicals produced in the United States or imported in到美国nited States in an effort to determine the risks that these chemicals pose to human health 和/or the environment. Spill Prevention, Control & 对策 Plan (SPCC) was written to prevent pollutants, such as oil, from being 释放d into the environment.   • Storm Water Pollution Control
    • The Storm water Management Program (SWMP) is prepared as a requirement to comply with both state 和 federal regulations. For the School of Science 和 数学, the primary investigators/supervisors/managers identify general 和 specialized training needs based on job tasks 和 危害 associated with that the employee/student’s role.
